What is impeachment?
How can a president get impeached and what would follow after that? Who would be in charge? Well, first of all, impeachment is a legal process by which the government charges the president with treason, bribery or high crimes and misdemeanors. Although any member of the House of Representatives can initiate an impeachment process, the process can only proceed if it is approved by a majority vote in the House of Representative and the House Judiciary Committee.
So, at this point the president would formally be charge with either treason, bribery or high crimes and misdemeanors but that doesn’t mean that he is removed. The removal of the president is decided by the Senate. If two-thirds of the Senators vote to remove the president, then the president is formally removed.
So you can see how the impeachment and removal of the president is very much dependent on political power in the House of Representative and the Senate. Realistically, the president’s own party members would have to vote against him, which is highly unlikely.
What happens when the president is impeached?
Alright so let’s say the president of the United States is impeached and removed. What happens after that?
Would there be a new election? Well, we have to go back to the constitutional law which states that the presidential line of succession must be followed in a case the president resigns, dies, or is removed from the office. So, no new elections, the next president in the line succession would be the Vice President and he would serve as a president until the end of the supposed president’s term.
According to the current line of succession the power would remain in the political party the elected president represent up until the 6th turn. For this to happen 6 presidents would have to die, resign or be removed which is very unrealistic.
The line of succession was actually triggered pretty recently, in 1974 when Nixon resigned and Ford became the president and in 1963 when Kennedy was killed and Johnson became the president. America is not the only country that follows this system, so does Canada and a few other countries.
